ages and occupations, who recognize
the importance of excellent libraries.
  • Assist the libraries in providing the best
possible service to the community
  • Provide volunteers and financial assist-
ance to the libraries
  • Cooperate closely but remain
independent of  the libraries
  • Promote the importance of library
services to the community

Why does the library need friends?
Although tax supported, public libraries need
many additional items for which funding is not
allocated.  F.O.L.K. provides supplementary
funds for such items as:
  • Circulation materials
  • Children's Programs
  • Staff Education
  • Support for Summer Reading Program
  • Community Adult Programs

A Free Read-Aloud at the Library Literacy Program for Families
Presented by Friends of the Libraries, Kona with support from:

5:00pm - 6:30pm   Registration at 4:30PM
Where:    Kailua Kona Public Library

(Parents must participate with their children, no exceptions!)
This free monthly program is to encourage family literacy. We
have travelled around the world this year and made passports
to use each month as we explored the world through reading.
There are separate reading groups separated by ages, and their
parents. Each group will have a person reading aloud to them,
followed by a discussion of what was read. Afterward, the
families will meet on the lanai for light refreshments, door
prizes, and books.
Aloha O’e our last Program of the
Year - A World United through
Learning & Travel
Foreign exchange students
presenting their experiences
living in Hawaii. The host
families will be there to help, too.

CARPET IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

For Kailua-Kona Library, the highlight of the year 2012 was the
purchase and installation of new carpet squares. Thanks to FOLK and
all the volunteers who tirelessly put in hour after hour raising money –
mostly through books sales – you were able to spend $36,000 on this
project. Comments from the public range from “It really looks great” to
“What color did it used to be?” Again, mahalo one and all for making
this effort for your library.

Friends of the Libraries, Kona a.k.a., F.O.L.K.
Receives $1,000 Grant from the IRONMAN Foundation

Friends of the Libraries, Kona (F.O.L.K.) is pleased to announce a $1000.00 grant from the IRONMAN Foundation and World Triathlon
Corporation in support of our Friendly Bus to the Library Program.
F.O.L.K. provides bus transportation for second grade students in Kona elementary schools to visit the library.  On the visit the Children’s
Librarian will take the students on a tour, provide a story hour and help them receive their library cards. Early literacy skills contribute to
future success in school. Libraries help parents learn to be their child’s first teacher.
This grant is part of the ongoing efforts by the IRONMAN World Championship to strengthen our community and perpetuate the aloha
spirit.
