Irene Citron
Irene spent most of her life in the San Diego area and worked at GEICO for 35 years, retiring as Director of Human Resources for the West Coast Regional Office.
In 2019, she and her husband moved to Hawaii to enjoy a slower pace, a peaceful setting, and a friendly community in retirement. Their energetic five-year-old Australian Shepherd helps keep them active.
Irene first visited her local library on an elementary school field trip. She was captivated by the idea of borrowing books, taking them home, and bringing them back later, and she soon became a regular.
She enjoys reading nonfiction and belongs to a long-distance book club whose members share and mail books across the country.
Beyond reading, she enjoys gardening, playing mahjong, and attending hot yoga classes.
While seeking volunteer opportunities in Kona, Irene discovered that F.O.L.K. needed help with its monthly book sale and so she became an active supporter. There she met lobby sales manager Darla, who invited her to stock the lobby once a week—a role that suits her interests well.
She also helps with other projects, including assembling Books for Babies bags filled with books and beautifully knitted caps for newborns at Kona Community Hospital.
She enjoys working with everyone at F.O.L.K. and appreciates the team’s warm, welcoming spirit. We are grateful to have Irene on our dedicated volunteer team.
