Each year, the Hawaii Public Library system challenges residents of all ages to read with a themed Summer Reading Program. Participants of all ages sign up online and log their reading hours. Prizes are awarded for completing the challenge. Local libraries provide theme-focused family fun activities.

F.O.L.K. supports the Kailua Kona and Kealakekua Public Libraries Summer Reading Program activities by providing funds for crafts, prizes, and volunteers.
