Stacy Bisgard, Kealakekua Branch Manager, and Kyra Acasio, nurse at Kona Community Hospital
Librarians Stacy Bisgard and Julia Riley, along with F.O.L.K. volunteers, regularly assemble Books For Babies bags for Kona Community Hospital so every newborn receives books. Early exposure to words improves reading skills; it’s never too early to start.
The Rotary Club of Kona and Friends of the Libraries, Kona provides funding for this program.
Kyra, the Clinical Nurse Educator in the Labor and Delivery Department at the hospital, gratefully stores these bags until babies are born. She appreciated the new colorful inserts on how to read to your child, new black-and-white soft book and the inclusion of locally published titles supporting the community. Knitted baby hats made by volunteers are also a part of this newborn bag.
